Love it best pastries go early because all the best ones go quick ! Delicious coffee

Clean, friendly, delicious!! I got some small pastries for my fiancé and his family, and I had a chicken empanada and it wasn't greasy at all and was the best I've ever had!!!

So... I can absolutely see why locals would be drawn to this welcoming little bakeshop cum cafe. What I'm trying to decide is if it was worth the detour off the U.S. 1 & 9 during a recent day trip in Jersey. Anyway, I was here because I was lured by the chance to try Bizcochos, which, near as I can figure it, has different meanings depending on the country. In this case though, I *think* it's an umbrella term that includes all that is buttery, flaky, delicious pastry, whether sweet or savory. And just for the record, even though some of the reviews say this is a Uruguayan spot, when we asked the friendly counter person, she said it was Argentinian. Not that I would know the difference either way. Apologies for the digression: Back to the point, I liked but did not love the various Bizcochos that hubby, me, kid and my Mom tried. My favorite by far was the Caramel, though sadly, I only scored a tiny bite since we were sharing. I wasn't nearly as into the Ham-filled one, which was stuffed with a chunky piece of ham and a little on the dry side. I have a feeling the Ham & Cheese was better, but the kid got the last one and he wasn't sharing. Croissants were tasty, but not as light and flaky as I'm used to. A word about the Cafe Con Leche: As good as everyone says and absolutely worth ordering. A word about the Space: Veronica G. calls it 'homey,' and I'd say that's accurate. It's cheery and clean with a few tables and a couple TV's that invite lingering. A word about Parking: There's a small lot fwiw. Bottom Line: I have a feeling Lina S. is right on with her strategy of coming here first thing in the morning to get the Bizcochos fresh out of the oven. We were here in the early afternoon and the selection was slim, with the Ham Bizcochos bordering on stale. We also weren't entirely sure what to order, though to her credit, the very patient, sweet counter person tried to guide us. Ultimately, I'd come back for the Caramel Bizcochos and Cafe Con Leche. Just not sure I'd go out of my way.

Born and raised in New Jersey, I've driven past Elizabeth countless times but never had a reason to stop in....UNTIL I heard about Alkazar Bakery! An acquaintance of mine on YELP kept posting these DELICIOUS photos of a number of different pastries from this bakery that I just had to see if they tasted as good as the pictures.... and trust me, Alkazar Bakery did not disappoint! The bakery is full of delicious Uruguayan, Argentinian, and Peruvian cakes, cookies, and pastries. I decided to order a dozen bizcochos (sweet bread), three I ate right there in the shop and the rest I took home to my family! The bread itself is so sweet and savory that it's flaky exterior literally melts in your mouth! Inside the bread, you can choose from a variety of fillings, my favorites being ham, caramel, and guava and cheese! The caramel bizcochos might be my favorite thus far, for in addition to the caramel filling the entire bread tasted like an anisette cookie! Absolutely scrumptious!! Even the plain croissants cannot even be described as plain... I've just never tasted a bread so loaded with taste all on its own. I must add, that Alkazar also serves fantastic coffee. I usually drink my coffee black or with a splash of milk, but since I was at the bakery I decided to go all (milk and sugar) and it was nice and hot...and sweet just like the pastries in the shop! I have no idea what kind of coffee beans they use, but frankly I don't think it matters. It's that good! I believe it is also worthy to note that the bakery itself provides a very warm and relaxing atmosphere to just sit and enjoy your coffee or pastry. They have a decent amount of seating for a bakery, beautiful mirrors and colorful lights along the walls, and phenomenal customer service. I walked into Alkazar not even knowing how to pronounce "bizcochos" but the woman behind the counter was patient and kind.I wrote down "bizcochos" and she just smiled and knew exactly what I wanted! She then told what was inside each bizcochos, and made small talk with me about the weather (it was freezing that day!!!), and made me feel right at home. Random odds and ends- The prices are extremely reasonable. There is plenty of street parking along with a small lot only for Alkazar customers only. The restrooms were CLEAN, and they are open to 6pm every day except Sunday! That's pretty good for a bakery. Most close around 3 in my area. I've always enjoyed pastries, from your standard danish to baklava, but I've never tasted anything like the bizcochos I had at Alkazar. This bakery is truly special and I will be back!

Best bizcochos! (Sweet bread?) they are always fresh and also make a great coffee to go with them. I love going there at first time in the morning to get them fresh out of the oven. Nice hidden gem.

Alkazar Bakery in the Elizabethport area is my own personal paradise. I've frequented here many mornings and many times on my lunch break. Given the decent sized population of Uruguayan immigrants in Elizabeth, there are many different varieties of establishments. Some of the locations are solely bakeries, some groceries, and some restaurants. Almost all of the locations offer their own form of the Uruguayan staple: bizcochos. For the uninitiated, bizcochos are the main breakfast food/anytime snack in Uruguay and are made as varieties of the croissant. There are countless (20+) varieties and all have different fillings and textures (dulce de leche, apple, quince paste, cheese, ham, spinach, etc). Some are savory, some are sweet. Alkazar Bakery is my favorite location for bizcochos in Elizabeth, and perhaps anywhere in the US. In addition, they serve the best cappuccinos and have other savory options such as empanadas, and ham and cheese sandwiches.

When you need a real cafe con leche and some authentic pastries, there is no other place. I love the homey feeling, the bread is always fresh and I never leave disappointed.

If you want the BEST bizcochos ever you need to check this place out...yes, there are other places in Elizabeth and surrounding areas that sell decent bizcochos but this is the best by far!!! It is in the hood though (not the worst part of Elizabeth but still pretty bad) so bring your bullet proof vest ;) trust me these bizcochos are well worth the risk lol
